Boseong Green Tea Fields

Many who visit South Korea never venture past the dynamic city of Seoul. While Seoul has enough diversity of beauty and experiences to fill any trip to the brim, there is so much to discover in the rest of the country. One of my most charming day trips from the country’s famous capital was to the beautiful rural region near its Southwestern coast. The Boseong Green Tea Fields are a beautiful oasis of traditional agriculture to experience tranquility away from the city.

Getting from Seoul to Boseong Green Tea Fields

So how to get from Seoul to Boseong Green Tea Fields? It was honestly a bit complicated. One first takes the KTX train from Seoul Station to the city of Gwangju. I then took the local bus in Gwangju from the train station to the U Street Bus Terminal. From there, I took a regional bus to the Boseong Tea Fields. Very important: when you’re looking for the correct bus to the tea fields, look for the stop specifically at the Boseong Green Tea Plantation (the town of Boseong has its own station). For reference, Boseong Green Tea Plantation in Korean is – 보성녹차밭.

The whole journey from Seoul to the Boseong Tea Fields including connection waiting times took at least 4 hours but it was completely worth it. The views along the way were also so beautiful! Across several trips to South Korea, I never tire of exploring the beautiful Korean countryside!

When you finally arrive at the park, there’s is still a bit of an uphill walk to reach the fields. At the time I visited, admission to the Boseong Green Tea Fields was 4,000 Won or just under $4 USD. Keep in mind that the hours of operation are from 9am – 6pm (5pm closing time in Winter).

The fields are simply beautiful. The fluffy green rows on slopes that curve up to the surrounding forests are a delight to stroll around. It’s compact enough to not be overwhelming but large enough to make for a good hour or two of leisurely hiking to enjoy the views and nature.

I visited during late September and I found the weather perfectly warm but not hot with clear skies. On a weekday late afternoon, it was pleasantly uncrowded. It was so peaceful and quiet walking around the lush green fields.

A Good Day Trip from Seoul?

While I was able to squeeze in the Boseong Green Tea Fields as a day trip from Seoul and had a great time, I would recommend staying at least overnight in nearby Gwangju. It took a surprisingly long time to make it from the Gwangju train station to Boseong, so I was left feeling a bit rushed! Gwangju itself is a rather cool city with a lot of history and great things to experience such as the memorial for the Gwangju student uprising and the nearby Juknokwon bamboo forest. So this region would make a great two or three day excursion from Seoul!

I find Korea’s beautiful countryside to be woefully underrated. The Boseong Green Tea Fields are just one of the many places to savor nature in this country’s diverse landscape.
