Seoul is divided by the Han River into roughly Northern and Southern sections. Cheonggyecheon runs through the Northern portion of Seoul, conveniently amongst some of the city’s most iconic tourist sites. The “entrance” of sorts to Cheonggyecheon is right by the grand Gwanghwamun Square adjacent to the historic royal palace, Gyeongbokgung.

By day, the stream is a colorful breath of nature in the heart of the city. The temperature is also lower by the stream making it the perfect place to rest during Seoul’s intense summers. Many areas of Cheonggyecheon are especially lush and green. By night, it’s an amazing place to take in the bright lights of the city. You can even find street food stalls to enjoy a tasty Korean snack.

The History of Cheonggyecheon

Cheonggyecheon’s water source is Ingwansan mountain: one of the many mountains from which you can enjoy incredible views of Seoul. The stream was used as a sewage system until the mid 20th century. It became populated with numerous shanty houses soon after the Korean War as more workers moved to the growing city. Later, it was the site of a large highway and remained in a rather derelict state. It’s hard to believe the crystal clear stream we see today was once so polluted.
